All's quiet here in suburbia...

Thirteen Things happening in my house as I type this:

1. The little guy is taking a nap.
2. I can see his brand new "First Haircut" certificate sitting by my desk
(and yes, he looks ridiculously handsome and grown-up!).
3.I have pizza dough resting in my mixer.
4.Red onions are carmelizing on the stovetop (yum).
5. Diced bacon, chicken breast and cilantro are waiting to be added to the mix. (BBQ Chicken Pizza is a favorite at this house!).
6. DD #1 is hanging out with her best bud.
7. So is dd #2.
8.DS #1 is playing Mario Party 7 on the Game Cube with his good friend (they both have adamantly declared that they've picked up J's room).
9. My mending pile is sitting accusingly on the kitchen table waiting for me to pull out my sewing machine.
10. I'm IM'ing with a friend about an upcoming Messianic Seder that we plan to attend next week.
11. I'm also fielding a phone call from the piano teacher about tomorrow's rounds of lessons.
12. I'm becoming increasingly aware that I forgot to put sunscreen on my face when I took the kids to the park today...
13. I'm also realizing that I really need to take the time to learn HTML if my blog is going to look as cool as some of the ones I've seen lately!

Our extended Spring Intercession (we're on a year-round schedule, so our Spring Break isn't until May) has made me realize a few things:

1. I miss not having my kids around more. They can be a lot of help when they want to me. Case in point: I asked for help in straightening up the house today and the next thing I knew, not only was the house dusted, but my little fingerprint detectives had wiped off all the woodwork, all on their own initiative! Also, they treated Mama really well on her birthday (even if they decided that I needed to start celebrating at six in the morning!).

2.We all need some routine. We've had a pretty low key break, and quite frankly, we're all getting a little squirrely. When we resume homeschooling next year, long breaks will definitely be reserved for traveling and high-intensity social seasons (Christmas).

3. Even though we all need routine, mixing it up can be a good thing, too. We've enjoyed spontaneous rainy-day jaunts to the dollar theater ("Movie's starting in fifteen minutes, who can be ready in five?"), a last minute visit from Aunt Sarah (a bday gift on par with the iPod!), way too many unbalanced meals, and even some extra sleep (does 7am count as actually "sleeping in"?).

My younger dd informed me that it wasn't really Spring Break, "because we didn't go anywhere". She's lobbying for the Mouse House next time. We'll have to see....

In Honor of My 34th Birthday (Tomorrow!)

Thirteen Cool Things about Being in My 30s



1. After years of people thinking I was here anyway, I'm finally starting to "look my age", LOL!

2. I've started to come into my own, finding my personal style and feeling comfortable (well, mostly..does my still-nursing body count??) in my own skin.

3.My husband (who was raised with very different ideas about gifts/celebrations than I was) has learned to really speak my love language in this area.

4. He's passing these skills on to my children.

5. When I wean the baby and toilet train him, I'll really and truly (and we really mean it this time!) be through with the diaper bag stage of my life!

6. My marriage is better than ever, and I'm more in love with my husband each day.

7. I've lived in one place for the longest time in my entire life.

8. I'm blessed with a great community and many meaningful friendships.

9. I'm no longer too concerned about what other people think of me...see, it's developing thicker skin, not wrinkles!

10. My dear, dear friend tells me that I'm one of those women who "gets hotter as she gets older". (BTW, I'm having that one done in calligraphy and framed for my wall).

11. I can laugh at myself more easily.

12. I'm a MUCH more relaxed parent the fourth time around...baby number four would have been an only child had he been born first!

13. I'm more adventurous and willing to try new things.

Good things come in small packages...
...like my new IPOD! (Insert dance of joy here).

I'm not a techie-type at all, but I've been pining for one of these little lovelies for the better part of a year, and my sisters and mom got me one for my birthday!

I'm just a little excited...and having lots and lots of fun ripping my CD collection (well, the ones that I can find, unfortunately our travel case with my faves is AWOL at the moment), and downloading podcasts.

I can't wait to strap it on and road test it (in my trainers, that is--it's gotten plenty of airtime in the car already).

It's Thursday Thirteen Time!

Thirteen Things Heather loves to do:
(in no particular order!)



1. Spend time with my husband...pretty much anywhere, doing
anything!

2. Read to or with my children.

3. Walk/hike, especially in the mountains around my home.

4. Sew (with my awesome Christmas gift from my in-laws!).

5. Scrapbook.

6. Go for coffee/lunch/breakfast with friends.

7. Worship the Lord in song.

8. Hang out with/gab with my sisters and mom.

9.Bake.

10. Try new recipes (we tried three new ones this week, yum!)

11. Attend yoga or pilates classes.

12. Take long, hot bubble baths. (preferably with a good book, some high quality snacks and an icy fountain diet Coke!).

13. Get my toes done...the brighter the color, the better!

March comes in like a lion...

I went to a scrapbook retreat in the mountains this weekend.

We were told that it "could" snow, that our state was receiving unusual amounts of moisture that weekend. It was very welcome, as we've been in a drought that stretched over 140 days.

I've been to this part of the state before, and any "snow" I've seen (especially in March) has been a light dusting, easily brushed off, soon melted, and no threat to driving.

Not this time. It was SNOWING. We stopped Friday night to grab a birthday dinner for my friend, and by the time we got back to the car, it was covered in snow.

It continued through the weekend. We briefly considered leaving our camp to grab a coffee in town, but after breaking a trail to the van through snow up to our knees, decided that trying to navigate snowy mountain snows in my friend's new van was not the best idea. We trudged back to our warm scrapping room, grateful for the waiting warm PJs and roaring fire.

It was a close call getting out of the camp on Sunday. Ice and snow prevented our getting our rolling carts through; everything had to be carried out to the cars. Men at the camp pitched in to help dig out cars (and the road) and give needed pushes to get cars up the steep and slippery drive out of the camp.

Every time I looked out the window this weekend, or walked to the dining hall for meals, I found myself grinning from ear to ear in sheer wonder at drifts of snow the size of which I hadn't seen since the blizzards of my Ohio childhood. It wasn't just the stunning beauty of long icicles and thick frosted pine trees, but that I was witnessing it in ARIZONA, just weeks before the beginning of Spring. March truly had come in like a lion.

Oh, and I got 27 pages done in my youngest's baby book, fellowship with some amazing ladies (including my best friend), and an incredibly romantic note from my knight reassuring me how valuable my "little hobby" was to our entire family, and the generations to come. And we got down from the mountain safely.

It was a blizzard of blessings.

This last week has left me with very little time to blog and with a bad case of the Grumpies (yes, it's capitalized for a reason).

Here's the high(?)lights:

--My mom, who came up from Florida to take care of my kids while I went to Vegas with my hubby, ended up in the hospital with a nasty case of pneumonia.

--Some of my offspring, who will remain nameless, took advantage of the situation of being left with my stepfather during this time.

--Some of the aforementioned offspring have having truth-telling issues with mom and dad this week.

--Mom and dad managed to pass the crud to my two oldest children who are hacking and sniffling.

--The baby has pinkeye in both eyes, an ear infection, and rampant diarrhea.

--I'm (go figure) having a very hard time pulling together the stuff I need for my "Camp Crop-a-Lot" event that I'm supposed to be at in less than 24 hours.

All this to say, my theme for this week's Thursday Thirteen will be:

Philippians 4:8 (New International Version)

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy,think about such things.

Bless it all, I'm going to count my blessings if it kills me (and it just might, LOL!)



Thirteen Blessings that Heather received this week:



1. Despite everything going on at home, it was amazing to spend an entire morning afternoon all by myself.

2. During said morning, I got to work out, a rare treat these days.

3. I also got a facial, manicure, and pedicure. 'Nuff said.

4. We got last minute tickets to Cirque du Solei's Ka. It was incredible.

5. My Valentine gift, tickets to see Rita Rudner, ended up being in the front row.

6. My husband laughed so hard during the show that he snorted.

7. I laughed so hard that my sides hurt!

8. I widened my horizons by taking the Vegas monorail and exploring the Strip (and the incredible shopping) by myself. This is not like me, and was lot of fun.

9. My church family was so there for me when mom went into the hospital. By the time I got home, both my pastor and elder had visited, and my friend Kim had taken custody of the baby so that Mom's husband could go and sit with her.

10. A certain child's teacher did not let said child get away with the twaddle they tried to pass off as an English assignment during the chaos between grandma going to the hospital and mom and dad flying home. She also graciously let them redo the assignment instead of giving them the failing grade they probably deserved. (Pat on the back to self for not identifying the guilty party, LOL).

11. The baby was officially "graduated" from gastric specialty services at Children's Hospital and, while still on supplements, is off of his proton-pump inhibitors!

12. I found out that my sisters were working very hard to try and fly out to see me on my birthday. It didn't work out, but I felt very loved and cared about all the same.

13. My sweet husband is insisting that I still go on my crop this weekend...prepared or not. Considering that he'll be left to deal with less than healthy children AND have to cover my nursery duty at church, is there any wonder why I think he's the most amazing man on the planet?
